Autumn is my favourite time of year to travel and I think it is best to see the foliage via a road trip. My love of travelling at this time stems from my honeymoon in Quebec. My husband and I were enchanted by the freedom of the road so we drove to the Charlevoix region to spend our first week as husband and wife.
The day after our wedding, we breezily packed up our two-door car with a suitcase each plus maps and some zoomed in hotel locations printed from MapQuest. We drove off while family and friends waived goodbye. On the back of our car, just above the licence plate was a homemade "just married" sign. Upon reading the sign, drivers honked, waved and gave us a thumbs up and a smile. As expected, we stopped when we liked, ate at tiny diners and truly relaxed.
Fast forward eight years later and we now have smart phones and a SUV to fit our growing family. We are still enchanted by country roads, mountain drives, old villages and impromptu hikes. Vermont seemed like an obvious choice for our family with its opportunities to spend time outdoors through hiking, apple picking, visiting farms and fall foliage. Of course, we came to learn that there is so much more to the Green Mountain State. Of particular interest to me was the number of solar farms and small businesses with solar panels. In addition, many businesses operate under a social and/or environmental accountability structure.
Smuggler's Notch provided a home base on which we could explore the area. We hiked every day. I carried the baby in a carrier while my daughters largely walked (Evie sometimes rode on her Dad's shoulders). Afternoons were spent exploring the towns, visiting brewpubs, swimming, going to Ben & Jerry's or checking out bakeries, creameries and breweries. Sometimes we kept driving if one of the children fell asleep. The rhythm of hiking and exploring suited us for most of the trip. Here are some places that we visited:
Food & Drink
Doc Ponds Restaurant & Bar- We loved the Vt. Cheddar Fritters, Hand Cut Fries, Cubano
The Alchemist- our favourite was the Heady Topper
Ben & Jerry's- my favourite was The Tonight Dough
Harvest Market - Apple pie, breads, charcuterie board items
